Michael’s Graduation

“Why do the plants need water, Tia?”

“So that they can grow”

“Why do they need to grow?”

If you have ever been around a five-year-old, you know how much they love to ask questions. Michael*, who has been at For His Children since he was an infant, is as curious and inquisitive as they come. He isn’t satisfied until he knows the “why” behind every statement, and is always eager for the next field trip, ready to learn more.

This bright and precocious young man has just graduated from FHC’s preschool program, where he excelled in learning his colors, letters, and numbers, quantifying and qualifying objects, distinguishing between capital and lower-case letters, and reading. He loved the preschool’s cars and trucks, inventing stories while assembling and disassembling them. Michael hopes to be a firefighter or a pilot one day so that he can fly to the United States.

Besides his academic success, Michael enjoys tending the garden, assisting the tias (his caregivers) in the bodega (FHC’s thrift store), and playing soccer. Despite having Marfan syndrome, which affects his feet and vision, he doesn’t allow his physical limitations to hinder his effort or enthusiasm while playing. He especially loves caring for FHC’s resident quail—feeding them, gathering the eggs, and noting which birds need special care. We are so proud of Michael for his accomplishments and his adventurous spirit.

Next school year, he will begin attending a local, private school full-time along with a few other children from FHC. Michael is both excited and nervous to begin this new chapter, so of course he has been doing what he does best – asking his tias a lot of questions!

We are so thankful for your support in nurturing children like Michael! You are ensuring they can thrive in a stimulating and caring environment, progress academically and emotionally, and dream big dreams. Thank you for making Michael’s opportunities possible. We look forward to what next school year brings for him!
